Cathell Family Pages

One point of these pages is to remark on the ability of the Cathell's to raise families in an area where outside cash paying employment was scarce. Even though Rowlesburg and Parson are not far away by today's standards, in times before the auto, Green Valley residents could not practically commute to work in these towns. The Early Times in the Rowlesburg Area book says that Etam was a center for logging and sawmills from the early days. Probably there was also local grist mills to supply the neighborhood, but the primary occupation of the residents was farming. Over the years, there were two notable exceptions, one was a carryover from the industry of the 19th century and the other, very nearby, was a forerunner of the 21st century.

Photo above--the steam boiler house for Mahlon Martin Sawmill

In the 1920's Mr. Mahlon Martin established a medium sized logging and lumber manufactuing business not far from the intersection with Rt. 72 on the Green Valley Road. Mr. Martin constructed a logging railroad that continued up Green Valley to lumber sources at the head of the valley. Pete Cathell can still trace the right of ways near the Cathell homestead farm. Pete and Rich Cathell recall that the "mainline" right of way adjacent to the Platt Cathell homestead still had remnants of ties and ballast in their early childhood, but the rails were pulled when the mill shut down around the end of the decade. My father has commented that Mr. Martin's operation was handicapped by the fact that it had no rail connection to ship out the final product. Finished lumber was loaded onto the relatively small trucks of the day and was sent to Rowlesburg where it was then reloaded onto railcars. A commodity product such as lumber cannot withstand this type of inefficiency. A curiousity about this operation is that it is said that Martin used a Baldwin locomotive on this logging railroad. The photos in the Early Times in the Rowlesburg Area book shows the backend of a good-sized loco on what looks like a very steep grade for a rod-connected locomotive. The photo also show a fairly well excavated right of way that was produced with the assistance of a steam shovel; Pete says the grades are not overly steep, so perhaps the photos are deceiving in the amount of grade. Other photos show the steam-powered mill in operation with a log pond that has long since disappeared. My grandfather's last job at the Martin operation was to carefully de-construct the company houses. Mr. Martin's house still stands and is occupied nearby. According to my father, Mr. Martin had made his money by building railroads in Bogota and Columbia. Martin had a farm on the Ohio River at St. Mary's West Virgina and a another logging operation at Foxburg Pennsylvana. My grandfather would go to either location to work for Mr. Martin.

A similar sawmill operation was the longer lived and better documented Woodbine mill at Erwin West Virginia, over Sinclair Ridge on the Cheat River. It operated its own captive railroad, the Rowlesburg & Southern Railroad. At least one if not more of the Cathell clan worked for a time at Erwin.

Etam Earth Station

The Etam Earth Station was built by Comsat around 1968. Whatever its first roles were, it now serves a conduit for international phone calls and emails that are beamed down from satellites circling the equator. Apparently these phone calls are the source of the recent concern on government spying, see an Internet post below. This facility also was involved in transmitting very early Internet communication according to another article below. Unlike the Martin sawmill, this operation looks impressive but probably has not created too much opportunity for locals, perhaps excepting when it was built. When I lived in Garrett County Maryland, some of the people working at Etam lived around Oakland and commuted the 30 miles or so. When this facility was being built, one amusing fear was voiced by some of the more superstitious valley residents: they thought that the antennas would be so sensitive that they could pick up the conversations of the long departed. The location of this array in Etam has to do with the "radio quiet" character of the deep and secluded Green Valley. I can attest to that fact; my grandparents had a TV antenna far up the mountainside of their valley farm along Buffalo Creek. It almost required mountain climbing skills to ascend the cable way that inevitably suffered from fallen tree limbs. The result of this effort was WDTV from Clarksburg WV and perhaps a snowy Pittsburgh station or two.

At the end of Green Valley Road (near Tucker County) are some long-lived gas wells; the pipeline runs down the Buffalo Creek Valley (and through the front yard of my grandparents who heated and cooked with it). The gas line would occasionally spring a leak and some valley resident would light the escaping gas for entertainment.

Tie Yard--Rowlesburg

Rowlesburg was laid out before the coming of the B&O railroad, but its industry has been tied to that road ever since. The location in the photo above was called the Tie Yard as it was where wooden railroad ties could be sold to the B&O. It is located in the section of land that was to the south of the railroad, west of the river and east of Rt 72. Before the creation of the railroad servicing complex at M&K Junction across the river, the Tie Yard area had a engine house and tower along with the passenger station. Passenger stops were made at Rowlesburg up through the 1970's.
The majority of ties delivered to the B&O were probably cut in small area sawmills that made use of second growth smaller hardwoods. Ties could also be hand-hewn with basic tools. My grandfather's family was involved in this business for cash income. The process went something like this. Small hardwoods were cut with an axe and crosscut saw and then snaked with a horse to a central loading point. Here each was bucked to the correct length and rolled up onto low tressles or contrivances to get the tie off of the ground. A chalk line was made to one side of the tie and the cutter climbed on to the still round tie and carefully cut scores into the side of the tie to the chalk line all along the length of the tie with a sharp axe. The cutter dismounted and picked up the other essential tool, the broadaxe. The broadaxe is really a large triangular shaped chisel with a wooden handle. The handle has a sideways bend in it to the effect that if you look down on top of the handle, the blade is offset to the right. With this offset, the broadaxe was swung like a pendulum and the tie face was produced at a ninety degree angle. This process was repeated, perhaps on the opposite side only or on all four sides. Besides the B&O, other markets for ties could have included the West Virginia Central & Pittsburg(h) in Tucker County and maybe even the "mainlines" of the bigger logger railroads.

If hand-hewing sounds dangerous, it was. My grandfather related that he once sliced open his leg with the broadaxe, producing a life-threatening wound.

Also in this same area is a section of Rowlesburg called "Tarhole". An aquaintance was giving me directions to an event at the new firehall; she said it was located in Tarhole. Rowlesburg is an attractive town so I was curious on how the area on the southwest side of the town received such an unglamorous name. As usual, my father,Carl Mitchell Cathell Sr., a native of the Rowlesburg area, had the story. The top of the railroad track wye that surrounded the Tie Yard actually was used as a siding that went upstream along the Cheat River. One can speculate that it once served the large Stitzinger sawmill along the banks of the Cheat. In later years, however the siding was often used to park tankcar loads of asphalt for local roads departments to access. Railroader slang for a siding ( a.k.a. sidetrack) is a "hole", so it stands to reason that they would have named this particular siding "Tarhole". My father also recalled that there was a very early gasoline storage tank at the end of this siding. At some point it went up in flames in a very spectacular fire.

M&K Junction-- Rowlesburg, August 4, 2007

An west bound coal car train waits "in the hole", probably for the higher ranking Q316 to pass.

The B&O became even more important to southern Preston County at the turn of the 20th century when the Morgantown and Kingwood Railroad was built between Rowlesburg and Morgantown and when the B&O St Louis mainline was improved to allow much heavier tonnage. The M&K Railroad was built (by Henry G. Davis' son-in-law and business partner, Sen. Stephen Elkins) to tap Preston County coal fields, timber and limestone resources. At its height, around 40 coal mines were served and was no doubt a reason that a large portland cement facility was built adjacent to Rowlesburg at Manheim. The second reason for the M&K Junction facility has to with geography and politics. As related in Railroutes of the Alleghenies webpage, the Allegheny Mountain ridges created a huge barrier to Baltimore City's novel idea of the multi-state rail road. Maryland ends before the Alleghenies are completely crossed, so Baltimore had to depend on it neighbors, Virginia, or for the optimum railroute, Pennsylvania to allow the B&O to reach the opportunity of the Mid West. But by the 1840's when the B&O was ready to move west from Cumberland, the Pennsylvania Railroad had been formed and as its first victory, blocked the B&O from building up the later Sand Patch grade into Pennsylvania. As a result, the B&O built the mountainous West End and nowhere were the mountains more daunting than at Rowlesburg. Up to three high-powered steamers pushed coal drags up Briery Mountain to Terra Alta day and night for years, each requiring an engineer and fireman. In the steam era, upwards of 15 M&K and helper turns originated out of M&K, giving high quality employment to those who did not mind living close by and being available on short notice. Included in this legion was my grandfather's Uncle Will and several Carrico relatives of my grandmother. The helper crew assignments out of M&K had the advantage of probably not requiring "layovers" away from home. Diesel helpers are still required to get coal up to the Allegheny summit, however they apparently now are tied on further west. Only in the last few years was the M&K (CSX Kingwood sub) abandoned, a reason to maintain engine crews out of M&K, however the Whitetail Coal Mine, not too far to the west, also required an M&K turn. Note in the photo that M&K Junction still has what appears to be an operating tower, at least there were vehicles parked outside. If it is still in operation, this tower is the last of dying breed. Most mainline dispatching and switch operation on the far-flung CSX system is done out of Jacksonville FL.

The B&O also provided Rowlesburg area employment to shop employees (the brick building was a busy shop that performed moderate levels of maintenance up through the diesel era), hostlers and other involved in supplying water, coal and sand to the locomotives, signal maintainers (my father's occupation), track crews, station agents, tower operators and in early days, track walkers who kept an eye out for broken rails, bridge problems and other situations that could cause disaster.

Grace Emery's Wedding To Mahlon Martin

June 28, 1905

From Bradford (PA) Landmark Society

It was quite literally the social event of the season. Grace Elizabeth Emery, age 30, the only daughter of Bradford's foremost entrepreneur and oilman, Lewis Emery, was to wed. And considering that Lewis Emery was possibly the richest man Bradford had ever seen, it was going to be quite the event.

Grace had not been born here (she was born in Titusville on January 27, 1875), but her family had moved to Bradford shortly after her birth, and it was here that Lewis Emery gathered his immense fortune. And it was here that she would be married.

The groom was Mahlon C. Martin, age 35. He was a nephew of Mahlon Martin, an early Pennsylvania oil entrepreneur, and who had projected the first pipeline for carrying oil. He was born in Roister Landing, New Jersey in 1870, and by 1905 was the manager and part owner of the Bogota, Columbia street railways, with partial interest in that country's emerald mines. He moved in diplomatic circles, and aided the United States during various uprisings and revolutionary troubles in South America. It is not known how he and Grace met, but it seemed an ideal match and a wonderful way to join together two oil empires and families of wealth.

The evening ceremony was performed at the Church of the Ascension on Chautauqua Place, with the Rev. A.R. Kieffer conducting the nuptial rites, and over 400 friends and relatives crowded into the church. The Bradford Era wrote "the Episcopal Church was beautifully decorated with fern, daisies, palms, and smilax, and presented a most attractive appearance . . . Long streamers, interlaced with ferns and daisies, were suspended along the walls of the church, and the chancel and altar were resplendent with wild flowers, enhanced by the artistic arrangement of palms and potted plants, the entire effect being as akin to nature as the decorative art would permit."

At precisely 8:30 PM, the processional began, and the bridal party entered the church to the strains of the bridal chorus from Lohengrin, as sung by the choir, as they proceeded down the aisle. A heavy cross of gold, borne by Clark Bogart, led the procession, followed by four altar boys, and then the remaining 16 members of the choir. Next came the 12 ushers - Jay Bird, Delevan Emery, Earl Emery, Frank Zook, Theodore Wilson, G.E. Green, B.M. Bailey, William Lenhart, George Crawford, C.E. McCafferty, Bert Rockwell, and Hoxie Clark. The maid of honor, Florence Ramage, came next, preceding the bridesmaids Florence Haskell, Grace Jones, Eleanor Bonham, Elizabeth Boyne, and the matron of honor, Mrs. Hoxie Clark.

Grace's gown was specially woven of rose point and duchess lace, made of princess style, and with a court train of duchess lace. She wore a white veil of tulle and carried a white ivory prayer book.

While the ceremony was taking place, the choir softly sang "Perfect Love". During the processional, Mendelssohn's Wedding March was played by the organ and the Jamison Orchestra. The bride and groom were then conveyed to a waiting carriage for the short trip to the Emery mansion on Congress Street, where the reception party would take place.

A thousand people waited there for a glimpse of the bride. According to The Bradford Era, "the streets became crowded for several blocks on Congress Street and near the house it was impossible for one to walk through the mass of humanity. The Emery lawn, the lawns of the nearby residences, and the corners of Park Street, facing the Emery residence, were thronged with curious onlookers. Policemen were stationed in front of the residence and along the walk leading to the house to keep the crowd back, in order that the 1400 invited guests might pass up the walk and into the house. The crowd maintained their position for hours."

Once inside the house, the guests made their way to the third floor, where the gorgeous and expensive wedding gifts were displayed. The gifts were so numerous that a room had to be specially prepared to receive them, and a second stairway was built for the guests to descend. The gifts included almost every article of household elegance that the mind could conceive of.

Some of the gifts included an ebony chest containing 287 pieces of sterling silver; a saddle and bridle; a complete sterling silver tea set with the Emery crest engraved upon each piece; a sterling silver set of platters, candelabra and punch bowl; a sterling silver banquet vase; a hand wrought silver flower centerpiece; a Limoges china service; an after-dinner sterling silver coffee service; many pieces of rock crystal including vases, decanters, dishes, and crystal candelabra; linen, Mexican and Spanish drawn work, paintings, engravings, and "bric-a-brac" of every description.

The groom's gift to Grace was a magnificent emerald guard chain and emerald banquet ring. Each bridesmaid was presented with hand wrought gold brooches, with emerald settings, and each usher received emerald scarf pins.

Following the lavish reception, the happy bridal couple left at 1:00 PM by special railroad car, to Pittsburgh, where they planned to travel to St. Louis for several days, then on board the steamer Deutchland to London, then on to Paris, Spain and then finally down to the future home in Bogota, Columbia.

But sometimes wealth, circumstance, and high society are not enough to guarantee happiness. Something happened to the bridal couple on their way to their honeymoon, and within a day Grace returned home, alone. She never publicly announced what had happened between the two of them. Mahlon Martin was never mentioned again. She remained in Bradford the rest of her life, and became an honored philanthropist, helped to establish Girl Scouts in Bradford, became a respected businesswoman, joined many organizations in the city, and traveled extensively throughout the world. She died March 2, 1941 at the age of 66. Grace never remarried.

From an Internet article about domestic telephone survelliance

Intercepting communications carried by satellite is fairly simple for the NSA. The key conduits are the thirty Intelsat satellites that ring the Earth, 22,300 miles above the equator. Many communications from Europe, Africa, and the Middle East to the eastern half of the United States, for example, are first uplinked to an Intelsat satellite and then downlinked to AT&T's ground station in Etam, West Virginia. From there, phone calls, e-mails, and other communications travel on to various parts of the country. To listen in on that rich stream of information, the NSA built a listening post fifty miles away, near Sugar Grove, West Virginia. Consisting of a group of very large parabolic dishes, hidden in a heavily forested valley and surrounded by tall hills, the post can easily intercept the millions of calls and messages flowing every hour into the Etam station."

Fron another article abou cration of the Internet by Vinton Cerf

The earliest demonstration of the triple network Internet was in July 1977. We had several people involved. In order to link a mobile packet radio in the Bay Area, Jim Mathis was driving a van on the San Francisco Bayshore Freeway with a packet radio system running on an LSI-11. This was connected to a gateway developed by .i.Internet: history of: Strazisar, Virginia: Virginia Strazisar at BBN. Ginny was monitoring the gateway and had artificially adjusted the routing in the system. So what we were simulating was someone in a mobile battlefield environment going across a continental network, then across an intercontinental satellite network, and then back into a wireline network to a major computing resource in national headquarters. Since the Defense Department was paying for this, we were looking for demonstrations that would translate to military interesting scenarios. So the packets were traveling 94,000 miles round trip, as opposed to what would have been an 800-mile round trip directly on the ARPANET. We didn't lose a bit! It went over the Atlantic via a point-topoint satellite link to Norway and down to London, by land line, and then back through the Atlantic Packet Satellite network (SATNET) through a Single Channel Per Carrier (SCPC) system, which had ground stations in Etam, West Virginia, Goonhilly Downs England, and Tanum, Sweden. The German and Italian sites of SATNET hadn't been hooked in yet. Ginny was responsible for gateways from packet radio to ARPANET, and from ARPANET to SATNET. Traffic passed from the mobile unit on the Packet Radio network across the ARPANET over an internal point-to-point satellite link to University College London, and then back through the SATNET into the ARPANET again, and then across the ARPANET to the USC Information Sciences Institute to one of their DEC KA-10 (ISIC) machines."

From "History of the Internet Page 4"
By Vinton Cerf, as told to Bernard Aboba
http://www.webmastercourse.com/articles/internet/history/page4/

The Etam Earth Station was built by COMSAT"COMSAT (Communications Satellite Corporation) was formally established on February 1, 1963 as a result of the Communications Satellite Act of 1962, which charged COMSAT with responsibility for developing a commercial communications satellite system. As the language in the act stated:
it is the policy of the United States to establish in conjunction and in cooperation with other countries, as expeditiously as practicable, a commercial communications satellite system, as part of an improved global communications network, which will be responsive to public needs and national objectives, which will serve the communications needs of the United States and other countries, and which will contribute to world peace and understanding.
The previous year, AT&T and NASA had successfully launched the Telstar satellite, which provided the link for the first transatlantic television broadcast. Although COMSAT was established to limit the likelihood of AT&T monopolizing the satellite communications industry as it had the telecommunications industry, AT&T nevertheless owned 29 percent of the company's stock and named three members to its board.
COMSAT launched its first satellite, Early Bird, in 1965. Unlike Telstar, which flew in relatively low orbit, Early Bird flew in a geosynchronous orbit, allowing it to provide around the clock coverage to a much larger area. It covered the North Atlantic region using earth stations in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France and Italy.
COMSAT had, a year earlier, become a partner in Intelsat (International Telecommunications Satellite Organization), a consortium of eleven countries whose goal was global satellite coverage. By 1969, Intelsat had established full global satellite coverage through its system of geosynchronous satellites.
Nineteen sixty-nine was a landmark year for another reason: COMSAT Laboratories, the company's research and development arm, opened in Clarksburg, Maryland. The building, designed by noted architect Cesar Pelli, housed a state-of-the-art lab for research into microwave technology, solar cells, solid state systems, and semiconductors. Some of the projects pursued by the lab included the development of a more efficient solar cell, digital echo cancellers, lighter and more efficient storage batteries, and equipment that would allow a doubling of the capacity of a satellite transponder for television transmission.
